Career spent at one school

The following article was published in the Croydon Advertiser in 1988 at the end of a long and distinguished career by one of the school’s most recognisable teachers.

SPENDING a teaching career entirely in one school flies in the face of modern convention.

But Mrs Yvonne English has no regrets about doing just that as she retires after 39 years at St Andrew’s School, Croydon, the last 11 as deputy head.

“I joined the school as an infant teacher in 1949. There were three […]ments in those days – infants, juniors and seniors,” she recalled.

Two years later the school became a secondary modern and Mrs English taught art. She […] became head of art and senior mistress.

St Andrews High, a Church of England School in Warrington Road, became a comprehensive ten years ago.

Of course […] much better […] she smiles. “We […have?] super children and helpful parents.

I have enjoyed my [en… ety] much but I am […now?] looking forward to travelling and doing craft hobbies in my retirement.”

Mrs English, who lives at Dormansland with her husband John, welcomes the introduction of the new GCSE exams.

“It is better for the children to have continuous assessment throughout the year,” she believes. “I think the school has a bright future and I wish it luck.”

Former pupils and parents are welcome to attend her farewell party.

It will be held at the school on Thursday, July 21, the day before Mrs English leaves at the end of term.
